Electrical Safety
Hazard Hamlet
2nd through 5th Grades
This free presentation is designed for 2nd – 5th grades. A remote-controlled display called “Hazard Hamlet” details outdoor and indoor scenes where people are not making wise choices around electricity. It shows dramatically what can happen when you come in contact with electricity.
The presentation opens with a discussion about the basic concepts of electricity. How electricity attempts to travel to the ground and how it takes the easiest path to get there. Electrical terms such as “conductor” and “insulator” are explained, including why people can be a conductor of electricity. Safety around electricity is the primary objective.
After the introduction, we tour “Hazard Hamlet,” encouraging students to participate by deciding what should be done in each scene. This is followed up with a question and answer session. An activity book is given to each student as an additional learning supplement to reinforce what was learned.
This presentation takes 20-30 minutes but can be tailored to meet your time needs. It can be presented in a classroom, library/media center, or any space with access to a table near an electrical outlet. Typically one session can accommodate up to 50 students, depending on space availability and adult supervision.
If you think your local school would be interested in the Hazard Hamlet presentation, please have your teacher submit the Presentation Request Form or contact the Member Services department for more information.
